In April of 1995, Duran Duran released an album of cover songs called Thank You. While panned by critics on the whole, the album actually produced a few quality cover versions including 'White Lines', 'Success', and the title track, 'Thank You'.
The second single, however, was singled out by the original artist as "the best cover ever done of one of my songs." That song was Perfect Day, originally composed and performed by Lou Reed.
The interesting part about the video to Perfect Day was that original Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor returned to play on the single and appear in the video. He also made a promotional appearance for the single on Top of the Pops. He would not appear with the band again until the 2001 original Fab Five reunion. As a Duran Duran fan, I have to say that this a version of the band I would have preferred. Sorry Andy Taylor defenders, but Warren Cuccurullo is my choice. Without getting in to a long-winded debate, I prefer him as a creative guitarist, a strong songwriter, and due to the fact that he spent more time with the band than Andy ever did, or ever wanted to. But I digress. This certainly wasn't the first cover song Duran Duran recorded, but it is one of the more beautiful tracks they've released. The band also released covers (separate from Thank You) of David Bowie's 'Fame' and 'Diamond Dogs', John Lennon's 'Instant Karma', and a live version of Cockney Rebel's 'Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)', which included an appearance by Steve Harley. But as for Perfect Day, well-I wouldn't have started this with any other cover song.
